Yoga and pure barre

This week two of my workouts were courtesy of Athleta. Athleta stores offer free workouts to the public. I live close to the Southpoint mall location in Durham. I looked at the Southpoint store location website for their calendar of classes and saw two classes which sparked my interest. The classes are typically hosted in their store, they just move aside the tables and racks of clothes.

On Thursday I attended a vinyasa flow class with Ginna from the Heart of Yoga School. The class was the perfect workout after a long week of work. The class was relaxing and restorative. There were a total of five people in attendance which meant we received plenty of correction from the instructor. Often times, in larger classes, the instructor can’t correct your form or adapt the workout to individual skill sets. Ginna is a great instructor who doesn’t make you feel like you have to hit every pose perfectly and encourages you to make the class your own. We received a free class pass to try out the studio and I will definitely be checking it out!

Saturday I attended a pure barre class which Athleta hosted at the studios location in Chapel Hill. I have never attended pure barre before but have been curious about the classes as I have heard great things about it. I convinced my sister to attend the class with me as well. Once we arrived, we collected our gear for class and got set up.

008This is a description of the class from their website:

In just 55 minutes, you will achieve a total body workout targeted at the areas of the body women struggle with most:  seat, hips, thighs, abs, and arms. Each strength section of the workout is followed by a stretch section, which will help you achieve a long, lean, and strong physique. Pure Barre is truly the fastest, most effective way to change the shape of your body, producing results in as few as 10 classes!

We started with a warm up and that’s when I knew we were in for a tough class! The next 55 minutes were extremely challenging and had my muscles quivering the entire class. My sister and I kept catching each others eyes like “what did we get ourselves into?!”. This was another small class with five participants which again allowed for individual correction. The instructor learned everyone’s names and used them to encourage us when we were doing a good job which I felt was nice. This was one of those workouts which you knew was going to leave you with very sore next muscles the next day! Once the classes ended, the Athleta representative surprised everyone in the class with $25 Athleta gift cards!! It was very unexpected and appreciated. I will definitely be putting the gift card to good use. They also gave us goodie bags with water, a granola bar, and a hair tie. Here’s a quick picture I snapped after classes ended which shows the studio and the bar we used for the leg work.

009While we were at dinner last night my legs were already starting to hurt and I knew today was going to be brutal. I am in a lot of pain today, but it’s a good pain as I know I did something good for my body! I’m a pretty sad sight when trying to walk down the stairs. Tomorrow morning I’ll either be not as sore or even more sore, I’m hoping it’s not the latter!

Although I did a lot of triathlons and training over the summer, I haven’t done a lot of strength training to build my muscles and it is something I’m trying to incorporate more this fall/winter. It is so easy to fall into just doing cardio and not strength training.

What hard workouts did you accomplish this weekend? Have you taken pure barre before?
