Last weekend we headed to Asheville to do some hiking on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We first went to Asheville in May and loved it so we decided to go back for a visit in the fall. While we were driving, I tried a new fruit/nutrition bar called “That’s It“. The bars have only two ingredients: one apple and ten cherries. The bar was surprisingly delicious. The husband even gave the bar his stamp of approval which is rare for one of my “healthy bars”. That’s It bars are a little pricey (found at Whole Foods or $1.69) but they are a great way to get in two servings of fruit. I received this bar through my monthly StrideBox subscription.
Are we there yet?!
We decided to go hiking at Graveyard Falls which has two waterfalls to view. It is called Graveyard falls due to a huge windstorm which swept through the area and killed many trees, causing it to look like a graveyard until a fire came through the area in the 1920′s.
We walked down a paved path to get to the trail area. I felt like I was walking through a mangrove in Florida and not a forest in NC!
It was pretty chilly when we arrived to hike. It was about 49 degrees when we left the car and saw icicles on the rocky hills when driving up. When we arrived at the upper falls, we found many of the rocks were covered in ice.
To see the upper falls we had to navigate from dry patch to dry patch around the ice. On the way back down, the husband took a spill on the ice and actually slid about thirty feet down an icy rock. It was pretty scary to watch as there was nothing I could do. Luckily, he just had a scrap on his hand. The upper falls were worth the hike:
I’d like to go back in the summertime when it’s warm enough to go swimming or wading in the water. After hiking out, we stopped at an overlook to view Looking Glass Rock and the scenery was amazing. The pictures don’t do it justice.
